Pedestrian collides with parked smart car, car totalled

Mainz (dpo) - On Tuesday, a careless pedestrian in the city of Mainz collided with a parked smart car, totalling the car. According to witnesses, the man who caused the accident was moving at a speed of approx. 2 mph. Afterwards, the man, whose identity remains a mystery, fled on foot. He is now wanted by the police.

The occupants of the car, who were still in the car when the accident happened, are in a state of shock. “I had just backed into the parking space when this guy suddenly appeared out of nowhere and brushed his right knee against my driver’s door at full speed”, 31-year-old smart owner Matthias Gantz remembers of the accident. “I felt the shock caused by the collision and was only just able save myself by diving out of the car before it flipped.”
His 30-year-old passenger was not so lucky: she had to be cut out of the vehicle by firefighters and is now receiving psychological support.
“Luckily, all airbags inflated, so nobody was seriously injured”, a spokesperson for the fire service explains.
Mainz police have now appealed for further witnesses to come forward and attend the police station. The person wanted for walking away from the accident is probably between 25 and 35 years old and is of western European appearance. He is estimated to be between 1.6 m and 1.7 m tall (approx. 5 ft 3 in and 5 ft 6 in), and is of very slight build. He must also have a small red mark on his right knee.
However, the man must be presumed innocent at this stage since the police cannot be certain that he even noticed he had caused an accident.
